the_bats_meow @ 02:41 pm: In the market for a new machine
Greetings everyone!

I am in the market for a new machine, specifically a Pfaff (I'm a Pfaff pfreak).

I was wondering if any of you have experience with the Pfaff Selectline. Comments? Likes? Dislikes?

I currently use a Pfaff 362 - it has really served me well, but no longer satisfies my desires. I love doing heirloom sewing, so I am looking for stitches which can be used with a wing needle for hemstitching. The machine also has to be strong, since the majority of my work is in corsetry.

The Pfaff Performance is definitely the cat's ass, but is a bit out of my price range. I also would prefer something which is no computerized.

I would really enjoy hearing your comments and recommendations!

spydey70 @ 05:00 pm: I'm trying to shirr(sp?) a rather slippery fabric (polyester silk) on my old Singer 9805(it's so old that it doesn't exist anymore on the official Singer Co. website!). I'm using the elastic thread thingy..

I've set it to the longest stitch possible and have played with the tension from the loosest to the tightest settings, but the effect is always the same. That is, the stretch after is limited and the fabric remains gathered at some parts.

I'm thinking the problem is my machine (as much as my skill!) The bobbin sits in its well without the need for a bobbin case, and it seems the tension in the well is too great for the elastic to pull out evenly.

Has anyone had the same problem? Any advice or comment is much appreciated.

For those of you in the UK, the Fashion & Embroideryshow at Harrogate is on from the 6th - 8th October. Not only is it a great place to stock up on supplies and get inspiration, but there are usually several sewing machine manufacturers represented there.
I'll be there on the Sunday (the 8th) - can't wait!
